Dynamic Move: Korra

To animate a dynamic character and camera movement in perspective and tiedown an existing character

Goal:

Role:

All animation (rough and tiedown) and background design. Character designs by Nickelodeon.

Length:

5 weeks part time

Process

Since the perspective for this shot was extreme, I first blocked out the perspective grid, where Korra would be in relation to the walls and the cube, and how big she would be.

Roughing in all the frames roughly helped me realize that there were places where Korra’s silhouette wasn’t reading as well because she was being blocked by the cube. Additionally, her final pose animation didn’t have enough impact.

I began to play around with the camera animation and add in tiedowns to the keys. I also made changes to her posing in areas based off of the previous rough animation to add more clarity, strength and energy.

Final background following my perspective grid.

After tying down the rest of Korra and adding detail to the background, I made final tweaks to keep her animation and added a white fill to wrap up the video you see at the top of the page.
